Hum

HUM is a mobile app designed to help people suffering from tinnitus distress. The app helps users by providing relief via sound masking. The user can select from a variety of sounds and create their own custom sound mixes. Sounds range from therapeutic white noise to calming environmental noises such as rainfall, crickets, and trains that the user can select from. My role consisted of designing user flows, user interface, branding, developing a visual system, and designing over 20 icons with custom vector illustrations for the mobile app.

Creating a New Sound
(Main User Flow)
After conducting user research, I found that most users wanted a way to customize the mix
  • The user plays a sound
  • The user selects a new sound
  • Switches between the environmental and therapeutic sound options
  • A sound is selected which brings up the basic mixer
  • The user saves 'New Sound 4'
Edit and Equalize an Existing Sound
After conducting user research, I found that most users wanted a way to customize the mix
  • The user selects 'edit mode'
  • Chooses an existing sound titled 'Calm river'
  • Selects the EQ function
  • Edits the Equalizer to match the sound of the user's tinnitus
  • The user is brought back to the beginning with the app while playing 'New sound 4'
Deleting Sounds
If a user wants to delete sounds from the list there is a function available to do so.
  • The user selects 'edit mode'
  • Chooses an existing sound titled 'Calm river'
  • Presses the delete button
  • Completes the prompt to delete
  • The user is returned to the homepage
Resources Function
An important part of tinnitus recovery is educating the individual about the condition. I included resources that remind the user of habituation, as well as other coping methods.
  • The user accesses the resources page through the navigation bar
  • The user selects the 'CBT for Tinnitus' video
Meditation Function
Meditation has been shown to help reduce stress in people dealing with anxiety. I included a guided meditation function that the user can employ while simultaneously masking their tinnitus.
  • The 'breathing circle' expands and contracts to cue the user's breathing pace
